Roundup – Our Picks for the Best Game of 2017

Our favourites from 2017? Our individual GOTYs! Read on to find out…

Oh alright we admit it… that irresistible little neon hybrid console got a whole lot of play time this year at SpriteNation HQ, but would its tiny sour-tasting software make it into our prized “Best Games of 2017” list?

Err, yes. Yes, it would. Luckily some other stuff was played and enjoyed too. Here are our top picks!

Comment below with your best games of 2017 and see how well we match up to the opinions of the wider interweb…

Abi’s pick: Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

I tried to pick just “New Donk City” from Super Mario Odyssey as my GOTY, but apparently it’s not cool just to pick a single level of a game, and I’m too hipster to pick the game itself like half of the ol’ nettywebs. Along that vein, my heart was stolen this year, stolen by Rabbids and an excellent turn-based battle system.

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle was a game that I met with an almighty eye-roll when the concept was leaked. Mario, and those dumb Rabbids? A Mario game made by Ubisoft? Count me out. One glimpse of that original trailer though? Count me IN.

This game combines the classic whimsy that we know and love from the Mushroom Kingdom, with XCOM style gameplay that won my heart over in a second. Also – the Opera boss?! Epic.

Honourable mentions: Zelda (duh!), Super Mario Odyssey (yawn…), Life is Strange: Before the Storm

We weren’t impressed upon first showing, but the game converted us… by force.

James’ pick: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch, Wii U)

Before you shout at me for picking the most obvious GOTY of 2017, I have two very good reasons to justify my choice.

No. 1 – It’s just the best game of 2017, there’s no way to avoid the fact. I can’t think of a time a game a has reinvented a game series with such ambition and panache but still held onto the core hooks of the franchise that we have become so accustomed to and cherish so dearly.

No. 2 – It stops Tom, resident Zelda superfan from picking it, and I’m a spiteful fella like that.

So close, but yet so far: Yakuza 0, Life Is Strange: Before the Storm, Super Mario Odyssey

The appropriate shot, as the dev team blew the crap out of the traditional mechanics and made something oh so much better!

Tom’s pick: What Remains of Edith Finch (Xbox One, PS4, PC)

Argh, a tough choice this year, with stellar titles coming to us from all directions and then throwing hats at us, but this short and ever so sweet tale kept me guessing all the way to the finish. Not only is it delightfully unpredictable, well acted, and at times, touching, but you also get to play as a shark (winning); and that’s not even the best or the wackiest sequence of this engrossing yarn. More like this in the future please, Giant Sparrow. Plus, bonus points for not taking up 100+ hours of my life… (I’m looking at YOU Zelda!)

Close but no cigar: Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Horizon: Zero Dawn, PES 2018
